The Three Gorges Dam Essay -- China Chinese Infrastructure

Flood control and drought relief The most significant function of the dam is to control flooding, which is a major problem of a seasonal river like the Yangtze. Millions of people live downstream of the dam, and many large and important cities like Wuhan, Nanjing and Shanghai lie next to the river. Plenty of farm land and the most important industrial area of China are built beside the river. In 1954, the river flooded 47.75 million acres (193,000 kmÂÂ ²) of land, killing 33,169 people and forcing 18,884,000 people to move. The flood covered Wuhan, a city with 8 million people, for over three months, and the Jingguang Railway was out of order for more than 100 days. In 1998, a flood in the same area caused damage to the value of billions of dollars. The Chinese government asked for support from its military to fight the flooding. Two thousand and thirty-nine square kilometers of farm land was flooded. The flood affected more than 2.3 million people, and 1,526 were killed. The reservoir's flood storage capacity is 22 cubic kilometers (18 million acre feet). This capacity will reduce the frequency of major downstream flooding from once every 10 years to once every 100 years. With the dam, it is expected that major floods can be controlled. If a "super" flood comes, the dam is expected to minimize its effect. Power distribution The electricity generated by the Three Gorges Dam project is sold to the State Grid Corporation and China South Power Grid Corporation at a rate of ÂÂ ¥250 per MWh ($32.5 US). Nine provinces and two cities consume the power from it, including Shanghai. The power distribution and transmission of the Three Gorges Dam project cost about 34.387 billion Yuan. It was completed in December 2007, one year ah... ...t into the reservoir on average per year, in time, this silt could accumulate behind the walls of the dam, clogging the turbines' entranceway. Further, the absence of silt down stream would have two dramatic effects: ? Some hydrologists think that this could make downstream riverbanks more vulnerable to flooding.[45] ? The city of Shanghai, more than one thousand miles (1600 km) away from the dam, rests on a massive plain of sediment. The "arriving silt -- so long as it does arrive -- strengthens the bed on which Shanghai is built... the less the tonnage of arriving sediment the more vulnerable is this biggest of Chinese cities to inundation..." Also, the weight of the dam and reservoir can cause induced seismicity, which occurred with the Katse Dam in Lesotho. The Benthic sediment build up is a cause of biological damage and reduction in aquatic biodiversity. Disadvantages of Democracy Essay

In a democratic nation, it is the citizens who hold the right to elect their representatives and their governing authorities. According to a common observation, not all the citizens are fully aware of the political scenario in their country. The common masses may not be aware of the political issues in society. This may result in people making the wrong choices during election. As the government is subject to change after every election term, the authorities may work with a short-term focus. As they have to face an election after the completion of each term, they may lose focus on working for the people and rather focus on winning elections. Another disadvantage of democracy is that mobs can influence people. Citizens may vote in favor of a party under the influence of the majority. Compelled or influenced by the philosophies of those around, a person may not voice his/her true opinion. Every form of government is bound to have some shortfalls. Different people have different views about the various political systems. The advantages and disadvantages of any political system have to be weighed carefully in order to arrive at any conclusion. Why democracy A functioning democracy is the form of government that provides its citizens with the most freedom, the most opportunity, the greatest prosperity, and the most comfortable life. It is also the most stable form and by far the most fun. In a democracy you can choose precisely the religion that is most meaningful to you, and you can choose your spouse and your education. You can listen to any kind of music, and you are free to watch any movie and read any book that you like. You can move around freely and you do not have to ask anybody for permission to do so. You can also choose freely what kind of clothes you wish to wear. If you belong to a minority, you are protected against assault and infringement, and you have exactly the same right to go into politics and influence society as anybody else. If you are a woman, you have by law the same rights and opportunities as a man. Your father, your brothers, your cousins, your uncles, or your husband have no right to rule over you. You have the same right to education, training, and work, and you have the same opportunity for a free and a great life as boys and men have. You also have the legal right to make decisions regarding your body and to say â€Å"no† to sex if you do not desire it, even in marriage. You and all others are equal before the law, you have the right within legal limits to say and write what you want short of slander and libel, and you can meet freely with anybody. You can live without fear of the authorities. The same goes for your children and your extended family. In plain words: Democracy gives you the right to liberty, equality of opportunity, and safety, and the opportunity to earn and keep your own money and to have fun. The desire for freedom and security is in every one of us, and so is the need to have fun. Without those three things, we cannot live a happy and meaningful life. The need for equality of opportunity is a little more problematic than the other needs, since many of us would like to be a little better off than our fellows. But equality of opportunity is a prerequisite for democracy too, and it is worthwhile, as it helps to guarantee freedom, safety and fun. Therefore, democracy is not only important, it is vital! Simply because we’re all human, we all deserve to live in a democracy that works. Why democracy is better than other form of gov. Democracy is the best form of government because 1. Democracy represents the views and notions of all the citizens of the country, whether majorities or minorities. 2. It helps in solving conflicts and quarrels in a better way. 3. It provides a dignity to the people. 4. It helps in realising one’s mistakes and improving upon them. 5. There is no other form of government or an lternative better than a democracy. DEMOCRACY is the best form of govt.  Yes democracy is the best form of govt. It grants us many things. 1.Right to speech. 2.Right to information. 3.Right to vote and etc. It represents each and every citizen equally whether you are poor or you are rich. In a monarchy or dictatorship no one can say or present their point of view. They have to follow what a single man says but in democracy we have been granted by RIGHT TO SPEECH. Report Post Yes democracy is the best form of government. Democracy is the best form of government simply because no other form of government is known to work well. Democracy may have it’s flaws but all in all it works very fluidly. Socialism, for example, does not even come close to the best form of government. One can easily see this in Greece’s current state. Democracy has never led to complete government disorder like one can see Socialism does. Democracy is the best form of government As democracy means rule of people †¦ That is of the people for the people and by the people. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives. Democracy is the best form of government simply because no other form of government is known to work well. Democracy may have its flaws but all in all it works very fluidly. Some plus points of having a democratic form of government:- 1. Freedom 2. Democracy represents the views and notions of all the citizens of the  country, whether majorities or minorities. 3. It helps in solving conflicts and quarrels in a better way. 4. It provides a dignity to the people. 5. Democracy allows various people to rule the country through the representatives. 6. It also allows people to express themselves clearly and freely. 7. It Respects & promotes Human Rights 8. In this form of government all people are equal before the law. 9. Democracy is the only form of government where the people can voice their opinion. 10. In my view there is no other alternative form of government better than a democracy.

Family and Football - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 870 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/02/15 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Family Essay Did you like this example? Two of the most important things in my life is family and football. Family and football are one in the same to me. I value them both as they have taught me discipline, respect and loyalty. In the game of football my teammates and I have built an unbreakable bond like those of brothers. At the age of 5 my father started playing semi pro football for the Colorado Wildcats. The experience and joy I felt seeing him on the field allowed me to expand my horizons and see life in a different perspective. This made me want to better myself so that I can be a professional and make it to the NFL. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Family and Football" essay for you Create order I started playing flag football in the 5th grade and continued playing to my current year in high school. My parents and family were there to cheer me in even when I did not know they plays and that made me feel great. I knew that with my family support and dedication I was going to be a success story. I continued to practice with my dad, who taught me the game and when my freshman year of high school came I was 1 of 4 freshman students on the varsity team at Adams city high school. My sophomore year I transferred to George Washington high school. This is where I found the true meaning of family which was a big deal for me. Family is so important because they provide security making you feel safe. Having that support system. They will always love you, and be there for you no matter what. Having role models to show you how to act, how to carry yourself respect not only urself but respect others. Your family provides security Football has taught me important life lessons that I carry with me every day. I had to learn that you win some and you lose some. Losing games were really hard for me, however I learned that with sportsmanship, you shake the other players hands no matter if you win or if you lose. You also look them in the eyes and give them the respect that everyone deserves after playing the game. Optimism is not always easy. It is very easy to get down on yourself, get mad at your coaches, or say â€Å"I can’t.† However, sports teach you that you can’t just throw your hands up in the air and give up. Never give up. That is also where confidence comes into play. I did not have a lot of confidence in myself when I first started playing contact football. I was afraid that I would get hurt. My father told me that anything can happen on the field and in life; however, if you pay attention to your surroundings and believe that you can do it, anything is possible. I had to learn to b elieve in myslef on and off the field. I will never forget these life lessons. They have made me a better person and shaped me into the person I am today. I am continuing to learn new lessons every day. My mother and father always told me that school came first. My grades arent very good. I am still learning to apply the confidence I gained from football to my work in the classrooms. I turn in my classroom assignments as I am supposed too; however, my grades have been hurt dramatically because I choke up during test and quizzes, which hurt my overall grade. I struggle more with timed tests, I know the material, I know I can do the problems, I go blank. I pay too much attention to the clocks, because I am still afraid that the clock will pass me up and I will not finish in the time allowed. I know that I must play hard on and off the field in reference to my education. I recognize that test taking may be a weakness for me but nonetheless I strive to do my best day in and day out, by taking better notes during class, asking for help when needed and seeing my teachers during breaks, lunches and after school for the assistance that I may need. I want to join study groups, tutoring c lasses and seek out additional resources and assistance in college to ensure that I don’t repeat the same mistakes in the past with my grades. If being a football player is not in my future, Coaching would be my next step. I would love to be able to share the lessons that I have learned to other up and coming athletes. To mentor them on how to become good people, how to respect not just others but to also respect themselves, discipline and loyalty, and all the other great things that sports have to offer on and off the field. I would like the opportunity to make my family proud. I would like the chance to continue to make my family proud by being the 1st out of a few generations to actually make it to college and be successful. I understand to accomplish this, it will take hard work, will power and dedicated. I am willing to do what it takes.
